On Sunday, competitive athlete and local trainer Helkat Jaffer made history when he broke the Guinness World Record for the most steps climbed on a StairMaster in 24 hours.

At GoodLife Fitness Orleans, where Jaffer works, he climbed over 111,000 steps. The previous record was 108,000.

The remarkable challenge doubled as a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club Ottawa, with 100% of donations going directly to support youth programming and community initiatives.

“As someone who grew up with BGC Ottawa, this fundraiser feels like a full-circle moment,” says Jaffer. “The Club was a safe space for me as a kid—it gave me opportunities, friendships, and lessons that I’ve carried for life. This was my chance to give back in a big way.”

The new world record also marks a personal comeback for Jaffer, who recently suffered an Achilles tendon injury that took him off his feet and threatened his active lifestyle. Jaffer refused to let the setback define him. He dedicated himself to recovery, determined to come back stronger.

BGC Ottawa was equally inspired by Jaffer’s mission. “Helkat’s story is a powerful reminder of resilience and community,” says Adam Joiner, executive director, BGC Ottawa. “We’re honoured that he chose to support our programs, which help hundreds of young people each year realize their full potential.”
