The National Academy of Sports Medicine® (NASM) has reaffirmed its leadership in global fitness education by announcing the continued contributions of its Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) — a multidisciplinary team of researchers, educators, and practitioners who help guide the evolution of the organization’s curriculum, industry engagement, and evidence-based standards.

Established in 2020, the SAB plays a critical role in shaping NASM’s course content and ensuring that programs reflect the latest scientific thinking and practical application. As the fitness and wellness sectors shift toward more personalized, holistic, and preventative approaches, NASM’s SAB helps position the organization at the cutting edge of education and training for professionals worldwide.

Who’s on the Board?

The 2025 Scientific Advisory Board is chaired by Dr. Scott Cheatham, professor and associate chair at Cal State University–Dominguez Hills and co-editor in chief of the Journal of Fitness, Wellness, and Human Performance. He is joined by a diverse panel of specialists in sports medicine, behavioral science, physiology, sleep research, and clinical practice. Notable members include:

  • Dr. Guillermo Escalante, Assistant Dean at Cal State San Bernardino and sports nutrition expert
  • Dr. Brad Dieter, researcher and co-owner of Macros Inc, specializing in nutrition and diabetes
  • Dr. Antoinette Schoenthaler, behavioral scientist and Associate Director at NYU’s Institute for Excellence in Health Equity
  • Dr. Allison Brager, neuroscientist and sleep expert with the U.S. Army Special Warfare Center
  • Mr. Mike Elliot, high-performance leader and former strength coach for the NBA’s Utah Jazz and Phoenix Suns

These experts provide direct input into NASM’s product development, research strategy, and community engagement.

A Strategic Edge in a Changing Industry

“With technology evolving rapidly and wellness taking on broader definitions, the expertise and diverse backgrounds of our Scientific Advisory Board members are essential,” said Mike Fantigrassi, Head of Product at NASM. “Their insights ensure that NASM continues to lead with content that’s science-backed, relevant, and responsive to the needs of today’s fitness professionals.”

The SAB’s guidance helps NASM maintain its evidence-first approach — including its signature Optimum Performance Training (OPT™) model — while staying attuned to real-world application and the broader public health impact of fitness professionals.
