Planet Fitness has signed a new franchise agreement to expand its presence in northern Mexico, with plans to open additional clubs in Tijuana and Mexicali.
The agreement was signed with Impulso Gym, a joint venture between Great American Hospitality — an operator of several established U.S. restaurant brands in Mexico — and Fernando Sada of Desarrollos Mafersa, which previously served as general contractor for the first Planet Fitness locations built in Monterrey.
As of December 31, 2025, Planet Fitness operates 47 locations across 14 Mexican states. The new development agreement reflects continued international growth for the U.S.-based franchisor, which now has approximately 20.8 million members and nearly 2,900 clubs worldwide.
“We have seen tremendous success in Mexico since our launch in 2018, and our model is resonating,” said Chip Ohlsson, Chief Development Officer at Planet Fitness. “We are confident in Impulso Gym’s market-level expertise and their ability to bring the high-value Planet Fitness experience to life.”
Mexico remains a growth market for international fitness operators. According to the 2024 Health & Fitness Association Global Report, gym membership penetration in the country remains below 7%, suggesting room for expansion as consumer interest in health and wellness continues to rise.
Eduardo Orozco, owner of Great American Hospitality, said the partnership represents a diversification move for the group. “We are thrilled to partner with Planet Fitness to bring its proven fitness model to the residents of Tijuana and Mexicali,” he said.
Approximately 90% of Planet Fitness locations globally are owned and operated by independent franchisees, with the brand currently operating across the United States, Canada, Panama, Mexico, Australia and Spain.
