In the long-standing debate of strength versus cardio, strength has taken the lead in strides.  In fact, as one of the leading trends of 2025, strength is a crucial pillar of health and fitness, with research underscoring unmatched benefits.  

 

As the year kicks into high gear, let’s look at strength training through several lenses, and why you need a variety of equipment to help members achieve their goals.  

 

Strength Training: The Longevity Pill?

Strength training is an investment in future health.  Studies reveal compelling links between strength training and extended life expectancy:

  • Improved Muscle Mass and Mortality Rates: Research shows that higher muscle mass is associated with lower mortality rates.  A meta-analysis published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine analyzed 16 studies with data from over 1.5 million participants.  The findings suggest that engaging in muscle-strengthening activities for 30 to 60 minutes per week is associated with a 10% to 20% lower risk of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.
  • Reduced Risk of Chronic Diseases: A 2022 meta-analysis published in Nature Medicine found that engaging in strength-based exercises for just 30-60 minutes weekly can reduce the risk of premature death from chronic diseases by 10-20%.
  • Enhanced Cognitive Function: Muscle strength has been proven to slow cognitive decline.  Resistance exercises stimulate brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), supporting brain health.

 

Strength Training: But will it burn fat?

For far too long, we put in the time with cardio workouts, convinced this was the way to fat loss.  And while cardio is vital as a part of fitness programming, strength training is an underestimated, effective fat-burning tool:

  • Increased Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR): Building muscle increases the number of calories your body burns at rest.  Studies have shown that every pound of muscle burns approximately 6-7 calories per day, compared to fat, which burns only 2-3 calories daily.
  • EPOC Effect: Strength training creates an afterburn effect known as excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), where the body burns calories for hours after a workout.
  • Improved Insulin Sensitivity: Resistance training enhances your body’s ability to use insulin effectively, promoting better fat metabolism and reducing abdominal fat.

 

Strength Training vs Resistance Training; What’s the difference? 

While the terms are often used interchangeably, they have distinct nuances:

  • Strength Training: Focuses on increasing the maximum force your muscles can exert.  It typically involves heavier weights and fewer repetitions and is geared toward building power and muscle size.
  • Resistance Training: Focuses on a broader range of activities that use resistance to stimulate muscles.  Resistance can come from weights, bands, body weight, or even water.  It’s more inclusive and can be tailored to different fitness levels, focusing on endurance, functional training, rehabilitation exercise and more. 

 

How Does It Actually Work?

Muscle growth, or hypertrophy, occurs through a series of physiological processes triggered by strength training.

  • Muscle Fiber Recruitment: Lifting weights recruits motor units within the muscle, particularly fast-twitch fibers responsible for power and growth.
  • Mechanical Tension: The stress applied to muscles during lifting creates microtears in the muscle fibers, signaling the body to repair and strengthen them.
  • Protein Synthesis: Strength training stimulates muscle protein synthesis, a process where amino acids rebuild muscle tissue.
  • Hormonal Response: Weightlifting triggers the release of anabolic hormones like testosterone and growth hormone, which are crucial for muscle repair and growth.

 

How Does It Change the Body?

The physical transformations from strength training are profound:

  • Increased Bone Density: Weight-bearing exercises stimulate bone remodeling, reducing the risk of fractures and osteoporosis, especially in older adults.
  • Improved Posture and Balance: Strengthening core and stabilizer muscles improves alignment, balance, and functional movement.
  • Body Composition Changes: Strength training shifts body composition by increasing lean muscle mass and reducing, reshaping the body over time.
  • Enhanced Mobility and Flexibility: Contrary to the myth that lifting makes you “bulky,” strength training improves joint mobility when done with proper technique and a full range of motion.

 

Why Equipment Matters

Strength training and weightlifting will be new to many, while those who have been lifting for longer are looking for ways to help them push beyond their comfort zone.

 

Selecting the appropriate equipment is crucial for effective and safe strength training zones.  Different tools offer unique benefits that cater to various fitness levels and goals.

 

FREE WEIGHTS

Free weights like dumbbells and barbells promote functional strength by engaging multiple muscle groups and enhancing coordination.  They allow for a wide range of motion, making them versatile for numerous exercises.

 

MACHINES

Machines provide stability and support, which is especially beneficial for beginners or those focusing on isolating specific muscles.  They guide movements, reducing the risk of improper form and potential injury.

 

PLATE-LOADED

Plate-loaded machines mimic the feel of free weights, offering a natural range of motion while still providing stability.  The mechanics of plate-loaded machines also engage stabilizing muscles, enhancing functional strength.  Examples include plate-loaded leg presses or chest press machines often seen in professional gyms.

 

Incorporating multiple types of equipment into a fitness space allows everyone – from novices to athletes – to create a program that will help them achieve their goals.

 

STRENGTH TRAINING FOR LIFE

In a study published in Biology, researchers found that strength training for 90 minutes or more each week added almost four years to your life.  The researchers looked at over 5,000 men and women in the US, measuring their telomeres (DNA caps) which shorten with age – they found that participants who spend more time strength training and significantly longer telomeres

 

The research is clear: Strength training is here to stay.
